Visit These Warm Beaches During Fall

Don't have to plan around school? Autumn is the secret season for U.S. beaches. You get the warmth without the summer crowds. These coastal spots are perfect for soaking up the sun in peace.

Orange Beach

Gulf Shores, Alabama

With average high temperatures in the 80s during September and October, Gulf Shores is still plenty warm enough for a myriad of beach activities. The 32 miles of beautiful shoreline is less crowded than during the peak season, so you’ll have more room to stretch out. Anglers might want to try their luck at landing flounder and redfish, and don’t miss any of the several festivals that take place this time of year.

Trunk Bay Beach

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Fluffy white sand and calm waters are among the reasons many beachgoers put Trunk Bay on their list of favorites. In October, you’ll enjoy daytime highs in the mid-80s. There’s a snack bar, restrooms, showers, picnic tables and beach chairs—everything you need for a relaxing beach holiday.

Fall temperatures at this beach on Hilton Head Island hover between the high 70s to low 80s. Play volleyball, rent bikes and appreciate that there are always lifeguards on duty. Rinse off in one of the outdoor showers, and then settle in at one of several restaurants within walking distance.

El Escambron Beach

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Fall temps in Puerto Rico are typically in the high 80s, so it might be a bit toasty for some folks. El Escambron Beach, though, is absolutely spectacular, with clear water, soft sand and beautiful mountain views. Relax in the shade of a palm tree or take your gear out for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Hanalei Bay

Kauai, Hawaii

Hanalei is a large bay on the northern, quieter side of Kauai. The two-mile-long beach features white, powdery sand against clear, warm waters. October daytime temps average around 84 degrees. Visitors appreciate the peaceful, lush vibe of Hanalei.

Florida Keys

This string of tropical islands remains warm well into fall — both air and water temperatures. You may encounter a bit of rainfall in September, however, as that is the area’s wettest month. But you’ll miss the crowds, and you’ll find plenty of events to attend.

Coronado Beach, California

This compact, urban beach is located on an island just off the coast of the country’s 8th biggest city, San Diego. Drive the famous, curvaceous 1.12-mile-long Coronado Bridge to get the charming hamlet. Enjoy lunch at a delicious seafood spot, and then spend a relaxing afternoon sunning near the waves.
